56th National Awards for year 2008 were announced. Like always, Telugu films missed major awards but offbeat Telugu Film 1940 Lo Oka Gramam, directed by Narasinha Nandi, was adjudged as Best Regional Film (Telugu). From Telugu, 1940 Lo Oka Gramam, Arundathi, Ashta Chemma, Batukamma, Cell, Gamyam and Neninthe were short listed but only 1940 Lo Oka Gramam won the award. That too in the regional category.
Bengali film "Antaheen" was named the best film. Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has bagged her first National Award for her performance in Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion". The Best Actor award went to Upendra Limaye for Marathi film 'Jogwa'.
